Parabens are in many products that we use everyday, lotions, creams, shampoos, conditioners, cleansers, and even toothpastes. They are in so many things that they can be difficult to avoid. They can even be found in pharmaceuticals and some food products.

Studies have shown that parabens can be bad for you in several ways. The skin absorbs parabens readily, putting them right into your system. They have shown to mimic estrogen in the system, which is known to raise risk for some types of breast cancer. They may also have adverse affects on the reproductive systems of men and women. They have been linked to other cancers as well. Mthylparaben has even been banned from fragrances sold in the United Kingdom. Parabens are also thought to have an affect on development of children. They do not know exactly why this happens.

Because of all of these risks it is important to avoid parabens. There are organic alternatives available. Be sure to read labels closely. Just because something is labeled organic does not mean that it is completely paraben and chemical free. With a little extra care you can avoid parabens and keep you and your family safe.
